The Academic Advising Office (AAO) helps students to explore their academic interests and goals, and connect them to resources that meet their objectives at different stages. The advising network include Academic Advisors, Peer Mentors and Industry Mentors. Through continuous dialogue, these advisors will guide students in choosing courses, participating activities, and developing professional competence.

AAO is looking forward to lighting up students’ academic pathways by discussing various thoughts thoroughly, and connecting students to suitable resources, so that they are able to put their goals into action. In the meantime, students’ input and feedback also guide and deepen AAO’s services. A reciprocal relationship is built up between students and AAO.

During a meeting, the Academic Advisor will help students discover their values through tools such as cards and guide students in recognizing their abilities and weaknesses. Next, the Academic Advisor will introduce resources to students such as courses and on- or off-campus programs, which will enable students to proactively plan their next actions. After taking those actions, students can schedule another meeting with the Academic Advisor at any time to share your reflections.

Student Feedback

  • I felt bewildered when I found out my department courses were not what I expected. After I talked with the academic advisor, I realized that I was interested in Mandarin Teaching, and I was also able to recognize my own strengths gradually. In my second academic advising session, I came up with an action plan and I was so excited about it. I am very focused and goal-oriented now, and I really appreciated what I got from the AAO meetings.

    - Student G, Department of Chinese Literature

  • Discussing with the AAO academic advisor, I not only overcame my blind spot, but also learned about many channels to obtain resources. Most importantly, I would access my current resources and abilities and explore my goals in advance for the academic advisor to learn more about me and to provide suggestions. In addition, the academic advisor would use different career cards to help me understand my strengths and weaknesses, so I know what to improve and gain confidence in myself.

    - Student F, School of Forestry & Resource Conservation

  • Neither did I know what resources I could have for interdisciplinary training nor have acquaintances to help me. Fortunately, the academic advisor introduced me to so many resources, and helped me clarify my goals, make my plans, and take actions. Now I know where to seek help when needed. I underwent a huge change from bewilderment and helpless to steady and sure.

    - Student J, transferred to Department of Life Science successfully

  • I came for academic advising due to the confusion between focusing on the Department of Law and transferring to the field of Special Education. The academic advisor discussed my difficulties with me, clarified what I wanted, considered the possibilities of interdisciplinary learning for me, and provided me with different perspectives to think about. Afterwards, when taking law courses, I learned about the profession of Forensic Interviewers which exactly integrated my interests in both Law and Psychology. I realized that this learning direction suited me the best, and there was even a specialization program for me to study further about the profession. I would definitely like to have another dialog with the academic advisor in the future!
